Hello Miami!

Mother's Day weekend is just wrapping up, which means half the city had brunch yesterday and the other half is still recovering from it. This week we're getting back into the rhythm with a boat tour of Biscayne Bay, a Cuban coffee workshop in Little Havana, an outdoor film night in Coconut Grove, a startup mixer in Wynwood, and a new mural unveiling in the Design District. In local news, Miami-Dade is rolling out expanded cooling centers ahead of what forecasters are calling a rough summer, and the new Terminal J at Miami International Airport is now open for international passengers. Let's get to it.

Best Events May 12 - May 16

Thru 6/1: ICA Miami Spring Group Show -- The Institute of Contemporary Art in the Design District is showing a new group exhibition with some genuinely surprising work, especially if you tend to skip the smaller shows. Free admission, always.

Tue, May 13, 6-8pm: Cuban Coffee and Chocolate Tasting at Azucar -- The Little Havana institution is doing a pairing event this week. Think cafe cubano matched against single-origin chocolate and small bites. Cozy and a little unexpected for a Tuesday. Tickets required, limited spots.

Wed, May 14, 7:30pm: Outdoor Film Night at Peacock Park -- Coconut Grove brings out the chairs and projector for a free film night on the waterfront lawn. Bring a blanket and get there early for a good spot. Free.

Thu, May 15, 6:30-9pm: Wynwood Startup Mixer -- One of the co-working spaces on NW 24th is hosting an open networking night for founders, freelancers, and anyone building something. Complimentary drinks for the first hour. Free to attend.

Fri, May 16, 6pm: Mural Unveiling in the Design District -- A new large-scale mural by a local Miami artist is being revealed on the side of a building at NE 40th and 1st. The artist is doing a short talk before the official reveal. Free.

Sat, May 17, 8am-1pm: Coconut Grove Farmers Market -- The weekly market at the corner of Grand and McFarlane is back in full swing. Good spot for stone fruit, local honey, empanadas from the guy in the middle row, and strong coffee. Free.

Sat, May 17, 5pm: Bayside Marketplace Evening Market -- The outdoor marina market stretches along Biscayne Bay with food vendors, live music, and a decent enough people-watching setup to just stand around for a bit. Free entry.

Local News

Miami-Dade expands cooling center access ahead of early heat season -- With forecasters warning of an earlier and more intense heat season than usual, Miami-Dade County announced this week it is expanding its network of cooling centers across all municipalities. Several libraries and community centers will now operate extended hours on days when temperatures or heat index values exceed safe thresholds. The county is also partnering with several private businesses to add air-conditioned drop-in spaces in neighborhoods with less public infrastructure.

New Terminal J opens at Miami International Airport -- After years of construction, Terminal J is now fully operational for international departures and arrivals at MIA. The new terminal adds significant gate capacity and was designed to cut down on the congestion that has frustrated travelers and airlines for years. Travelers should note that their gate assignments may be further from familiar checkpoints now, so building in extra time is smart for the next few months while traffic patterns settle.

There is a narrow footbridge tucked at the back of Bayfront Park, just past the amphitheater lawn, that most people have never found on purpose. It goes over a small lagoon and looks out directly at the port with cruise ships lined up behind it. At dusk on a clear night it is one of the better views in downtown Miami and almost nobody is ever standing there. Follow the path that runs south along the waterline and keep going until you see the bridge. It takes about four minutes.
