West Miami-Dade Wildfires Now Near Full Containment After 19,000+ Acres Burned – The Quarry 2, Well, and Coptic fires that erupted near the Everglades last week have burned more than 19,000 acres in total, triggering evacuation orders, forcing closures of the Florida Turnpike and Krome Avenue, and triggering region-wide air quality alerts. As of Sunday, the Turnpike and Krome Avenue have reopened and the fires are nearing containment.

Florida Property Tax Amendment Needs Voter Approval in November – The constitutional amendment passed by the Florida Legislature in early June would raise the homestead exemption from $50,000 to $250,000 by 2028, effectively eliminating non-school property taxes for most Florida homeowners. Opponents warn it could reduce local government revenues by more than $8 billion annually, with services like fire, parks, and transit at potential risk.

Mental Health Center Approved Unanimously After 22-Year Fight – The Miami-Dade County Commission voted unanimously on June 17 to open the long-stalled Miami Center for Mental Health and Recovery, ending more than two decades of delays since voters first approved it by referendum in 2004. The center, which has sat fully built but empty since 2023, will treat up to 75 residents at a time and divert people with mental illness away from county jails.

Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office Investigating Dual Deaths in SW Miami-Dade Farm Area – Authorities found a man and a woman dead in a farming area in Southwest Miami-Dade on June 19, with one person detained for questioning. The investigation is ongoing and few additional details have been released.

Miami Police Officer Hospitalized After Wrong-Way Crash on I-95 – A Miami police officer was hospitalized after a wrong-way driver struck his vehicle in the I-95 Express Lanes early Sunday morning. The officer is expected to recover, while the other driver remains in critical condition. The incident remains under investigation.

Congressional Primary for Frederica Wilson's Seat Gets Competitive – The August 18 Democratic primary to fill Florida's 24th Congressional District now has seven declared candidates, with Miami-Dade Commissioner Oliver Gilbert among the frontrunners. The district, which covers parts of northwest Miami-Dade and Liberty City, is one of the most Democratic in Florida and the primary winner is effectively deciding the next representative.

Inter Miami Set to Sign Casemiro in July Transfer Window – The five-time Champions League winner verbally agreed to join Inter Miami, with the formal move expected to be completed when the MLS secondary transfer window opens July 13. Casemiro chose Miami over LA Galaxy and Saudi offers, with the chance to play alongside Messi a decisive factor.

Team USA Cruises Past Australia, Turkey Matchup Looms Thursday Night – The USMNT beat Australia 2-0 on June 19 to go 2-0 in group play, setting up a decisive Group D showdown with Turkey in Los Angeles this Thursday at 10pm ET. A win would clinch first in the group for the Americans ahead of the knockout rounds.

World Cup Transforming Miami Economy With Billion-Dollar Impact Projected – With seven matches assigned to Miami Stadium through July 18, analysts project the World Cup will generate $1.5 billion in economic impact for Miami-Dade alone, more than double the impact of Super Bowl LIV in 2020. Hotel occupancy in Brickell and Downtown is running at near-capacity through mid-July.

Miami-Dade Transit Extended Through Fan Fest, Running Until Midnight Nightly – Miami-Dade's Metrorail and Metromover are running extended service until midnight throughout the Fan Festival period, with service until 1am on select match and event nights. Fans attending events at Bayfront Park are encouraged to take transit to avoid road closures and parking issues in the downtown core.

It marks a new chapter for the stadium as a multi-use venue beyond MLS matches.

La Sponda, Coconut Grove – Coastal Italian restaurant La Sponda is slated to open this summer at 4 Grove Isle Drive at the private Vita at Grove Isle resort, with Biscayne Bay views, a seasonal Mediterranean menu, and a room designed by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio. China Grill Returns at Bal Harbour Shops – The iconic South Beach restaurant that closed more than a decade ago has reopened inside Bal Harbour Shops, bringing back its large-format Asian fusion plates to a very different part of Miami than where it built its following.

Miami Heat Win First NBA Championship, June 20, 2006 – Twenty years ago this week, the Miami Heat beat the Dallas Mavericks in Game 6 to clinch the franchise's first NBA Championship, capping one of the greatest individual playoff performances in league history from Dwyane Wade. The Heat had fallen behind 0-2 before Wade carried them to four straight wins, finishing with 42 points and 13 rebounds in the comeback-defining Game 3.
