Juneteenth Celebrated Across Miami-Dade Tonight – June 19 marks Juneteenth, the federal holiday commemorating June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned of their emancipation more than two months after the Confederacy's surrender. Events are running across Miami today, headlined by the free Juneteenth Experience at the Miami Beach Bandshell hosted by nonprofit Hued Songs.

Colombia vs. Portugal Coming to Hard Rock on June 27 – Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal face Colombia in Miami's fourth group stage World Cup match on June 27 at 7:30pm ET at Hard Rock Stadium. Demand for this match is the highest of any group stage game at the venue given Portugal's global following.

Tri-Rail Ridership Surging with World Cup Traffic – Tri-Rail has seen a major spike in riders as South Florida commuters and World Cup fans opt for rail over gridlocked roads around Miami Gardens. Transit officials are adding capacity on match days and encouraging all fans heading to Hard Rock Stadium to use public transit.

Virginia Key Marina Referendum Set for November 3 – Miami voters will decide on November 3 whether to approve the $80 million, 45-year lease plan for the Rickenbacker and Marine Stadium marinas on Virginia Key. A previous referendum on Virginia Key was rejected by voters in 2021 by 52 percent, making this a closely watched rematch.

New Miami International Airport Advisory Board Holds First Meeting – A new advisory board focused on customer experience at Miami International Airport held its inaugural meeting this week, hours after a JD Power survey gave MIA strong consumer marks. The board is designed to bring ongoing resident and traveler feedback directly into airport operations.

George Pino Trial Enters Second Week – Testimony continues in the vessel homicide and manslaughter trial of real estate broker George Pino, now in its second week at the Miami-Dade courthouse. Bank of America to Finance $80 Million for County Vehicles – Miami-Dade County has reached a financing agreement with Bank of America to fund $80 million in vehicle purchases for county operations. The deal covers fleet upgrades across multiple county departments.

Jun 13–Jul 5, daily: FIFA Fan Festival, Bayfront Park – The World Cup's free downtown hub continues daily at Bayfront Park with live match broadcasts, food vendors, and cultural programming for the full tournament. Open to everyone.

Sun, Jun 21, 6pm: Uruguay vs. Cape Verde, Hard Rock Stadium – Miami's second World Cup match of the week brings Uruguay back to Miami Gardens. Tickets still available at FIFA’s website.

PopUp Bagels, Brickell – The viral Connecticut-born bagel shop known for loaded schmears and a cult following is opening a Miami location in Brickell, its first in Miami-Dade. Known for walk-in lines and no frills, just exceptional bagels.

Historical Event

Juneteenth and Miami's Black Freedom History, June 19, 1865 – Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced the emancipation of enslaved people, more than two months after the Civil War ended. For Miami's Black communities in Overtown, Liberty City, and beyond, the holiday connects directly to the history of those who built the city while being denied the rights it promised.

Historical Person

D.A. Dorsey, Miami's First Black Millionaire – Dana Albert Dorsey was a Miami real estate entrepreneur who became the first Black millionaire in Florida in the early twentieth century, amassing property in Overtown and on Fisher Island. He donated land for what became a public beach for Black residents during segregation, one of the few available to Miami's Black community at the time, and his legacy is remembered each year at D.A. Dorsey Tech in Liberty City.
