Coral Gables – The City Beautiful, founded in 1925 by developer George Merrick, runs roughly from SW 8th Street south to US-1 and centers on Miracle Mile and the Biltmore Hotel. It has always been Miami's most formally planned neighborhood and is currently in the middle of one of its biggest restaurant booms in years, with Buccan, Stand, and Manoli all arriving within months of each other.
Historical Event
The Founding of Coral Gables, 1925 – Developer George Merrick incorporated Coral Gables on April 29, 1925, at the height of the Florida land boom, having spent years designing a city built around Mediterranean Revival architecture, canopied boulevards, and strict aesthetic codes. It became the first planned community in Florida and remains one of the best-preserved examples of 1920s civic ambition in the country.
Historical Person
George Merrick, Founder of Coral Gables – George Edgar Merrick was a Miami businessman and dreamer who began acquiring land in South Florida in the early 1900s and spent years designing what would become Coral Gables before its 1925 incorporation. The 1926 hurricane and collapse of the Florida land boom left him financially ruined, but the city he built stands as his permanent legacy.
