Hidden Gems
The Kampong, Coconut Grove – A working botanical garden at 4013 Douglas Road, part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden, with one of the most diverse collections of tropical fruiting and flowering trees in the continental United States. Tours run by reservation; the grounds are lush, shaded, and almost entirely unknown outside plant circles.
Matheson Hammock Park, Coral Gables – A county park at 9610 Old Cutler Road with a man-made atoll pool that fills naturally from Biscayne Bay and calm, shallow water perfect for families in summer heat. The surrounding mangroves and bay views make it feel like you drove to the Keys without leaving Miami-Dade.
Las Vegas Cuban Bakery, Hialeah – A no-frills Cuban bakery on East 4th Avenue that has been running for decades, selling pan cubano, pastelitos, and croquetas at prices that feel like they haven't changed in 20 years. Locals line up early on weekends; the bread comes out of the oven before 7am.
Agustín Gainza Arts & Tavern, Little Havana – A gallery-bar hybrid on SW 8th Street known as Taberna del Pintor, where original paintings cover every wall and live flamenco or jazz appears most nights alongside a tight tapas menu. It runs quiet most evenings, which is exactly the point.
North Shore Open Space Park, North Miami Beach – A mile and a half of undeveloped beachfront at the north end of Miami Beach that gets a fraction of the foot traffic of South Beach despite being just as open and far less crowded. The natural dune system is still largely intact and the water is clean.
Islas Canarias, Westchester – A Cuban institution at 2 SW 94th Avenue that has been feeding Miami families since 1977, with a medianoche sandwich and croqueta that regulars have been ordering for longer than most customers have been alive. Cash-friendly, no pretense, table service from people who have worked there a long time.
Churchill's Pub, Little Haiti – Miami's oldest continuously operating live music venue at 5501 NE 2nd Avenue, a dive bar that has been putting on punk, rock, and experimental acts since 1979. It costs almost nothing to get in and the crowd is usually as interesting as the band.
The Underline Brickell Backyard – The linear park below the Metrorail from the Miami River to SW 13th Street, with fitness equipment, public art, and shaded trails that run parallel to one of the busiest corridors in the city. Most people still don't know it exists despite it being open since 2021.

Local News
FIFA Fan Festival Opens at Bayfront Park Saturday – The official World Cup Fan Festival launches June 13 and runs 23 consecutive days through July 5 at downtown Miami's Bayfront Park, with four large match broadcast screens, two live performance stages, and food and drink from 42 vendors representing countries competing in the tournament. Miami-Dade County is funding approximately $14 million of the event, which is expected to draw as many as 30,000 visitors per day and is free and open to the public.
World Cup Match Day Road Closures Now In Effect – Miami Gardens has issued a comprehensive road closure advisory for all seven World Cup match days at Hard Rock Stadium, with NW 199th Street closing at 5am on each match day and rideshare drop-offs prohibited at the stadium itself. The first match kicks off June 15; Miami New Times has published a full list of roads to avoid on match days.
World Cup Traffic Expected to Strain Downtown and Brickell – With the Fan Festival running daily through July 5 and the stadium hosting games in Miami Gardens, Miami-Dade officials are urging residents to use Metrorail, Metromover, and rideshare alternatives on high-attendance days. Brickell and downtown are expected to see sustained congestion during afternoon and evening hours throughout the tournament window.
Below-Normal Hurricane Season Forecast But Residents Urged to Prepare – NOAA and the National Weather Service forecast an 8-to-14-named-storm Atlantic season this year, with a 55 percent chance of a below-average season driven by the anticipated development of a strong El Niño pattern by late summer. Miami-Dade officials are still distributing hurricane preparedness guides and urging residents in flood-prone areas to review their evacuation zones now, before any storms develop.
Sargassum Hitting Miami Beach Shoreline Early This Summer – City of Miami Beach clean-up crews are operating daily along the full 7.5-mile beachfront to remove sargassum accumulation as the seaweed's peak arrival season moves into June. USF researchers forecast a heavy sargassum season for 2026; the city asks visitors and residents to avoid blocking clean-up equipment on the waterline.
Somali Referee Barred from U.S., Won't Officiate at World Cup – Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry into the United States by U.S. Customs and Border Protection this week, disqualifying him from officiating at any of the 104 World Cup matches. The decision drew international attention as FIFA prepares for a tournament being hosted across 16 U.S. cities.
Miami Beach Free Water Taxi Running Through Summer – The free water taxi service launched in January between Maurice Gibb Memorial Park in Miami Beach and the Venetian Marina on the Miami side of Biscayne Bay continues operating this summer, offering a 20-minute crossing as a car-free alternative to the causeways. City officials say the causeways are at capacity and view the water taxi as a long-term mobility solution, not just a seasonal experiment.

The Kampong at 4013 Douglas Road in Coconut Grove is a working botanical garden on 11 acres of bayfront land that once belonged to plant explorer David Fairchild. It runs largely by appointment, which is why most Miami residents have never been inside despite it holding one of the most significant tropical fruit tree collections in the country.
