Hello Miami!
Summer is officially here and so is the heat and so is mango season and so is the thing where everyone from up north starts texting you asking if they can visit. The city is quieter in June than any other month, which if you actually live here you know is an absolute gift. This week we have a Juneteenth celebration in Overtown, a sunrise paddleboard tour off Crandon Park, a Haitian food pop-up in Little Haiti, a free rooftop yoga night in Brickell, and a photography exhibit in Wynwood. In local news, hurricane season has officially opened and Fairchild announced a full summer of events built around the annual mango festival. Let's go.

Best Events June 2 - June 6
Thru 7/15: Wynwood Photography Collective -- A new rotating photography show from Miami-based photographers is up now at a gallery on NW 26th. The work leans documentary and street, which feels right for Wynwood even as the neighborhood keeps changing around it. Free.
Tue, Jun 3, 7-9pm: Juneteenth Early Celebration at Overtown Performing Arts Center -- The Overtown neighborhood hosts one of Miami's longest-running Juneteenth gatherings. This Tuesday event is a community preview with music, spoken word, and local food vendors in the courtyard. Free.
Wed, Jun 4, 6-8am: Sunrise Paddleboard Tour from Crandon Park -- A small outfitter running out of Crandon Park Marina is doing guided paddleboard tours at sunrise on Biscayne Bay this month. The water is flat at that hour and the light off the bay is worth waking up for. Small fee, reservation required.
Thu, Jun 5, 7pm: Free Rooftop Yoga in Brickell -- One of the fitness studios in Brickell City Centre is running a free rooftop class every Thursday in June. Bring your mat and arrive ten minutes early for setup. Free with RSVP.
Fri, Jun 6, 6-9pm: Haitian Pop-up Dinner at Little Haiti Cultural Center -- A rotating series of Haitian chefs are doing pop-up dinners on Friday evenings this month. The food is the real thing and the space is one of the more underrated outdoor venues in Miami. Tickets available at the door.
Thru 7/4: Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden Mango Festival -- Fairchild's annual mango festival is running through the Fourth of July. Over 200 varieties of mango, tasting, cooking demos, and trees for sale. Admission required but if you are going once this summer, go here.
Local News
Atlantic hurricane season opens June 1 with above-average forecast -- NOAA and Colorado State both released updated seasonal forecasts this week calling for an above-average Atlantic hurricane season, with a higher-than-normal probability of major storm activity. Miami-Dade emergency management officials encouraged residents to review their hurricane plans now, replenish supply kits, and know their evacuation zones before a storm is named. The window to prepare is always shorter than people expect.
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden announces expanded summer programming -- Beyond the mango festival, Fairchild announced a full slate of summer events including evening garden walks, plant sales, and children's programming running through August. It is one of the most genuinely underused places in Miami and one of the nicest on a weekend morning when the light comes through the palms.
Miami Featured
The mangroves along the western edge of Virginia Key hold the thickest concentration of wildlife in all of Miami proper. At low tide you can walk the path next to them and see herons, roseate spoonbills, and the occasional manatee feeding close to shore. It is technically inside the city. It looks nothing like the city. The entrance is off Rickenbacker Causeway just before you hit the beach and most people drive right past it without realizing the path is there.
